The Adventure of Two Friends Who Decided to Change the World!
- story behind our mascots Zio and Ziva.

Once upon a time, in two different corners of Europe, two young dreamers were growing up — Ziva, a curious girl from Slovenia, and Zio, a cheerful boy from Italy.

They didn’t know each other yet, but they both shared one strange habit: whenever they saw food wasted — especially bread — they felt a little sad inside. They didn’t know why, but something deep in their hearts told them that every crumb counts.

When Ziva was 13 and Zio was 14, their schools joined a student exchange trip to Turkey through an Erasmus+ project.
It was a sunny spring morning in Cappadocia, and the group had just finished breakfast.

Ziva, always polite and tidy, noticed that some of her classmates had left slices of bread on their plates. She carefully wrapped the leftovers in a napkin to feed the birds outside.
At that same moment, Zio — who loved talking to everyone — came by and said with a big grin:

“Hey, are you saving that for a bread party or something?”

Ziva laughed. “No! I just don’t like wasting food. In Slovenia, we say: Every piece of bread has its soul!

Zio blinked. “In Italy, we say Pane e amore — bread and love — maybe they’re the same thing!”

And just like that, a friendship began.
They spent the rest of the trip exploring Turkish bazaars, learning about local dishes like simit and pide, and talking about the planet, food, and life.

A year later, their schools met again — this time in Slovenia, Ziva’s homeland.
Ziva invited Zio to her small mountain village surrounded by green forests and clear rivers. There, she showed him her favorite place — the old Beech Forest, where she often sat with her sketchbook to draw plants and animals.

They joined workshops about climate change and forest protection. Together they learned:

  • How trees protect soil and help create rain,

  • Why renewable energy (like wind and solar power) is better than fossil fuels,

  • And how small daily habits — turning off lights, reusing bags, and saving food — make a big difference.

Zio, who loved technology, recorded their lessons and turned them into short eco videos with funny animations.
Ziva, who loved art and singing, wrote songs about Zero Food Waste and Green Living.
Their favorite line became their motto:

“Save bread, save the planet!”

Their next Erasmus+ trip took them to Poland, where they learned even more about energy and food waste.
In a small bakery in Kraków, they met a baker named Pani Marta, who taught them how old bread can be used in amazing ways — to make breadcrumbs, croutons, and even bread pudding instead of being thrown away.

That evening, Ziva and Zio helped organize a Zero Waste Cooking Night with other students. They made “Recycled Bread Lasagna” (Zio’s idea!) and “Green Energy Smoothies” (Ziva’s invention).

Between laughter, flour fights, and music, they realized something very important:

Teaching people about the planet can be fun — if you mix science with art and friendship!

When the exchange ended, Ziva and Zio didn’t want to stop.
So, they decided to continue their mission online.
They created an e-learning platform called “Zero Food Waste Volunteers with Art” — the same project you’re a part of today!

Zio took care of the videos, animations, and online games, while Ziva wrote the songs, stories, and eco-tips.
Together, they made learning about the planet colorful, musical, and exciting.

They even created their animated characters — cartoon versions of themselves — to teach others through short films and quizzes.

Ziva and Zio promised each other:

“We will teach kids, parents, and teachers everywhere how to love our planet and waste less food.”

They now travel (virtually!) across countries — from classrooms to e-learning modules — teaching about:

  • 🌳 The importance of trees and plants,

  • 💧 How to save water and energy,

  • 🍞 How to reuse leftover bread,

  • 🌞 The power of renewable energy,

  • 🌍 And how everyone, no matter their age, can be a Zero Food Waste Volunteer!

Today, Ziva and Zio are known as the Zero Waste Heroes.
They appear in school animations, songs, and even eco-comics — always smiling, always learning, always inspiring others to protect our planet.

Wherever you see the logo ZVOLUNARTIST, you’ll probably find them — teaching, laughing, and reminding everyone that every loaf, every leaf, and every action matters.

Because, as Ziva always says:

“We don’t need to be perfect — just better every day.” 💚

Let's sing it!

[Verse]
Bread and sunlight wind and rain
We can make the Earth smile again
Little steps from me and you
Can make our planet bright and new

[Chorus]
Sing with Ziva sing with Zio
Let the little gardens grow
Hand in hand our hearts will show
The love that makes the flowers glow
